¨Strands of self¨
This collection explores the power of women's hair in society, drawing inspiration from different interpretations of hair, and its importance in personal expression. The garments in this collection are inspired by the liberty within our hair, what changing it can do to ourselves and the world around us, and to integrate the concept of breaking free fromrestrictions created by society. The collection features a range of pieces that are crafted to translate the movement of hair, both literal- ly and throughout personal development, interpreted with different materials into clothing. Each garment is designed to showcase a unique interpretation of hair's meaning and its significance in our lives. The garments are designed to celebrate the beauty of hair and to empower women to express themselves freely through fashion and their hair.
This collection also integrates dance and party as a symbol of libera- tion and celebration of femininity. Therefore, the different materi- als, of both rough and delicate nature, are used to illustrate the contrasts at the core of this collection. The garments are designed to be worn on a night out, empowering the wearer with confidence and freedom of movement. From the bold accessories to the intricate designs, every detail is carefully crafted to enhance the message of empowerment and expression.
Creative process:
¨Strands of Self¨
This collection embodies the essence of contrasts and movement. The garments are meticulously crafted from a diverse blend of materials, encompassing both rugged and delicate, artificial and natural elements. This intentional juxtaposition is also reflected in the creative process, where designs were initially conceptualized and then flourished through spontaneous artistic choices.
To bring this collection to life, I began by sketching rough outlines and experimenting with materials, which I then sculpted or draped onto the mannequin to form a solid foundation for each garment. These designs were crafted to be adaptable for dance, featuring mini dresses and bodycon silhouettes. The addition of hair or plexiglass was instrumental in capturing the dynamic movement of the garments.
The design process for this collection revolved around a series of innovative experiments. It involved trial and error, exploring how to mold these unconventional elements around the human body and transform them into wearable pieces. Despite the materials not originally intended for clothing, they were purposefully chosen and ingeniously adapted. These unconventional materials provide versatile foundations that allow the same garment to be worn by individuals of different sizes and shapes. The hair can be skillfully braided to contour perfectly to each curve of the body, while the assembled metal rings form a flexible lattice that expands or contracts depending on its wearer.
Every aspect of this collection has been meticulously attended to. All finishing details are meticulously hand-stitched, second-hand fur has been carefully dyed at home to achieve the desired colors, and the plexiglass has been continuously heated and sculpted to attain the ideal shape. Furthermore, a majority of the materials have been sourced second-hand and repurposed, aligning with sustainable practices and emphasizing the importance of upcycling.
Materials& colors
Hair
Hair, an integral part of our identity, serves as an extension of expression in clothing within this collection. Despite its delicate nature, it presents a striking contrast to the robustness of metal, resulting in intricately designed pieces. With a focus on wearability and dance, hair beautifully captures and amplifies the dynamic movements of the garments.Leather
As a resilient and timeless material, leather forms a sturdy foundation for each garment. Its enduring quality allows for experimentation with other materials, while also embodying the essence of rock 'n' roll inspirations. It is worth noting that all leather used in this collection has been sourced second-hand, reflecting a commit- ment to sustainable practices.Metal
On one hand, metal represents strength, ruggedness, and an aura of toughness. On the other hand, it possesses a refined elegance, shining and shimmering in an exquisite manner. This duality mirrors the contrasting elements at the core of this collection-feminine expression and the inherent power it holds. The garments crafted from metal pieces can be perceived as contemporary female armor, symboliz- ing empowerment rather than mere protection.Fur
Drawing parallels between fur and hair, this collection incorporates fur as a distinct element, establishing a connection between humans and animals in their beauty and vulnerability. It adds depth and texture to the garments, highlighting the shared qualities of these natural adornments. All fur used in this collection has been dyed at home and sourced from upcycled materials, further emphasizing the commitment to sustainability.Plexiglass
While hair embodies active movement, plexiglass captures and freezes the essence of motion in its rigid form. However, both materials evoke a sense of fluidity reminis- cent of water. Hair gracefully flows, while plexiglass exhibits a transparent and shimmering appearance. Symbolizing freedom and strength, the plexiglass transcends the notion of conventional clothing, transforming into wearable sculptures. It encapsulates the inherent force and liberation that this collection embraces.Throughout this collection, the harmonious integration of hair, leather, metal, fur, and plexiglass showcases the innovative exploration of materials, celebrating the contrasting elements and their ability to evoke empowerment, grace, and the beauty of self-expression.
